In 1903 Ransom E. Olds had a difference of opinion with Frederick Smith of Oldsmobile about the size and price of their cars. Olds wanted to continue making inexpensive, dependable automobiles priced at $695.00. Smith wanted to make large higher priced cars.

In 1904 R. E. Olds started production of a new American Automobile called the REO. Two models were produced the following year. A single cylinder runabout with a folding rear seat and a four passenger Touring Car shown below in this 1905 Coca-Cola Advertisement.

The American Automobile above is a 1905 REO. The two cylinder engine was located under the body. Note the hand rails on the cowel, or what was then known as the dash board. Compare the image above to the 1906 REO advertisement below.
