In 1909 every Thomas Flyer was a mechanical duplicate of the 1907 American Automobile that won the New York to Paris race in 1908. Typical specifications included 103 inch wheelbase on the 16 horsepower four cylinder and 103 inch wheelbase on the 40 horsepower six cylinder. The 60 horsepower four cylinder had a 127 inch wheelbase and the Thomas Flyer with the big 70 horsepower six cylinder had a 140 inch wheelbase. Tread width was 54 inches and 56 inches.
Two types of transmissions were used on the 1909 Thomas Flyers. 16 and 40 horsepower automobiles used a three speed forward and a reverse selective type sliding gear. On the 60 and 70 horsepower automobiles a four speed transmission was used. Transmission and differential gears were in the same case in oil.
34 inch wheels were used on the smaller wheelbase cars while 36 inch diameter wheels were used on the larger Thomas Flyers. 4 and 4 1/2 inch tires were used on all models. A double set of brakes on transmission shaft and rear wheels were used.
