Louis S. Clarke, a mechanical engineer was founder of The Pittsburgh Motor Vehicle Company in 1897. Clarke was instrumental in the invention of the spark plug, drive shaft and one of the first oil circulation systems. Clarke also built automobiles with the steering wheel on the left hand side which led to the standardization throughout most of the automotive industry in the United States.
1899 Autocar - Pittsburgh Motor Vehicle Co. The first American Automobiles produced by The Autocar Co. was built in Ardmore, PA in 1900. It was a single cylinder chain driven Runabout and very few were made. In 1904 a $1700.00 four passenger Touring Car was added to the Autocar line. The early Autocar's had tiller steering.
1907 Autocar - The Autocar Co. By 1907 Autocar was producing it's Runabouts with two horizontal opposed engine rated at 12 horsepower. Their Touring Cars were equipped with four cylinder engines that were rated at 30 horsepower. Both Autocar's had a sliding gear transmission with three speeds forward and reverse. Find drive was by direct shaft drive. The 1907 Autocars now had wheel steering with left hand drive.
Four Autocar models were produced in 1908, a $1200.00 12 horsepower Runabout, a $2750 30 horsepower Roadster, a $2750 30 horsepower Touring Car and the $3750 30 Horsepower Limousine. The 1908 Autocar Runabout was called "The Doctor's Car". By 1909 prices for the Autocar Touring Car increased to $1750.00. In the 1909 advertisement shown below the Autocar Touring Car was know as a Pleasure Car or Tourabout. This Touring Car was equipped with a 26 horsepower four cylinder engine and an imported H. T. Magneto.
1910 Autocar production included mostly Touring Cars priced at $1750.00 to $1800.00. A four cylinder 25 horsepower engine with a 4 inch stroke and a bore of 4 1/2 inch was used on these automobiles. Other features included a Bosch Magneto, 34 inch wheels, five lamps and generator and universal rims. The last Autocars were produced in 1912. The Autocar Co. continued as a truck maker until 1953 when they were taken over by the White Motor Company.
