1894 Stephen M. Balzer Automobile Balzer set up his own machine shop to try to capitalize on his patents. The Balzar was an American Automobile equipped with a three-cylinder, air-cooled, rotary-type engine that revolved in a vertical plane around the stationary crankshaft. Turning with the crank case was a stub shaft. The transmission had three forward speeds and no reverse. The driver selected the desired gear ratio by operating a lever and the same lever also controlled the clutch.
