De Soto
The De Soto Motor Corporation
Division of Chrysler Corporation
Detroit, Michigan

The rumors of DeSoto's demise that began cropping up in 1959 were true. At first Chrysler strongly denied that DeSoto would be terminated and even staged a "Two-Millionth DeSoto" celebration in 1959. $25 million dollars were allocated for future models, 7 million for 1960. But then Chrysler combined the DeSoto and Plymouth Divisions in 1960.

1960 DeSoto sales were very low, just 26,000 units. Only the Fireflite and Adventurer were produced, each as a Hardtop Coupe, four door Sedan and a hardtop sedan. The most popular 1960 DeSoto was the Fireflite four door Sedan, shown below.

The DeSoto Fireflite four door Sedan was the lowest priced of all the 1960 automobiles. Like other 1960 DeSoto cars it had a 122 wheelbase and new styling. The smae styling as the 1960 Chrysler. The Fireflite's were equipped with 295 and 325 horsepower engines.

"The Car You Will Either Own or Envy" claimed the above advertisement about this beautiful 1960 DeSoto Adventurer Two Door Hardtop. In 1960 Chrysler adopted a new unibody construction and so did DeSoto. The Adventurer was equipped with a eight cylinder engines rated at 305 and 330 horsepower.

This 1960 DeSoto Adventurer four door Hardtop was priced at $3,727.00. The highest priced DeSoto for 1960. The Fireflite Four Door Sedan was the lowest at $3,017.00. Engine performance was down on the 1960 DeSoto's but the Fins were still flying high.

The Last DeSoto

1961 was the last year for DeSoto. If fact most production was done by December 1960 and only 3034 1961 DeSoto's were made. Only two body styles were produced, one was a two door hardtop and the other a four door Sedan in a nameless series. Features included a odd looking double grille and diagonally stacked quad headlights. It was a sad ending for a first class American Automobile that generated much business for Chrysler for more than three decades.
