1949

Styling for the 1949 Ford was fresh and Ford sold their cars in numbers not seen since the 1930s. They were new inside and out, but not as radical some other American Automobile manufacturers such as Studebaker.

The principal change on the 1949 Ford body style was the departure of the rounded fenders of previous years and the propeller spinner centered between horizontal grille bars.

The propeller spinner center highlighted a "6" or "8" which indicated the 226 cubic inch 95 horsepower 6 cylinder engine or the 239 cubic inch 100 horsepower V-8 engine. Ford engines were unchanged from the 1948 Ford. The Ford six cylinder was used on the Standard body styles while the V-8 was used in the Custom body styles.

The 1949 Ford had a wheelbase of 114 inches and was unchanged from the 1946-1948 models. However, the new Fords had a ladder type frame and was 3 inches lower than previous models. Additional new features included Fords first fully independent front suspension, Hotchkiss rear end, live axle and leaf springs. Standard overdrive Transmissions were an option. Automatic Transmission did not show up on Ford cars until 1951.

The 1949 Ford line up included Tudor Sedans, Club Coupes and Fordor Sedans equipped as Standards and Customs. 1949 Customs were equipped with V-8s engines and Standards had 6 cylinder engines. Customs were also built as a $1,886.00 Convertible Coupe and a new $2,028.00 sporty two door 8 passenger Wagon. Both are shown below. The low selling Sportsman was dropped in 1949. The 1950 Ford Deluxe and Custom cars and trucks followed the 1949 Fords.
