The Spread Red Eagle (thunderbird) was the National Emblem of the Independent Oil Men of America. The Independent Oil Men of America was a group of independent oil men conducting a national publicity campaign to promote the sale of their products. In the 1920s the Red Hat brand was introduced by the National Petroleum Marketers Association for independent retailers. The Red Hat brand allowed independent retailers to compete with Standard Oil of Indiana.
