The Forest City Motor Car Co. manufactured the Jewell automobile in Cleveland, Ohio starting in 1906. This company soon moved to Massillon, Ohio and remained there until they stopped production in 1909. The Jewell name was changed to Jewel about 1907. The Forest City Motor Car Co. produced approximately 1,000 cars between 1906 and 1909. In 1906 the company stated that... "That is was necessary to produce an American Automobile that the average person could afford to purchase and maintain and one that would take the place of the horse and carriage."
1906 Jewell Model B Runabout The Jewell model B runabout sold for $400.00. Solid rubber wheels of 28 inches were standard. For $50.00 more one could be equipped with pneumatic tires. For only $25.00 a top and side curtains were added. This first Jewell automobile was produced with a 8 horsepower, 2 cycle, single cylinder, water cooled engine. Transmission was a single planetary type with triple positive clutch.
1907 Jewel Model D Runabout "It's Here and It's a Jewel" proclaimed this 1907 Jewel advertisement. This model D 1907 Jewel sold for only $600.00. It was equipped with a single cylinder two cycle engine that developed 8 horsepower. The transmission had two speeds forward and reverse. Equipped with lamps, top, side curtains, storm front and tools.
1907 Jewel Runabout Model D In 1908, the Jewel 40 was introduced powered by a 4 cylinder Rutenber engine manufactured by the Rutenber Manufacturing Company. The Jewel 40 was produced in a roadster and seven passenger touring car shown below. Both had a 120 inch wheelbase and 36 inch wheels and tires. 1909 was the last year of Jewel production.
