The Nordyke and Marmon Co.

In 1916, The Nordyke and Marmon Co. introduced the Model 34 which was equipped with an advanced aluminum ohv six cylinder engine along with an aluminum body, hood and radiator shell. A double transverse rear suspension was also introduced in 1916.

The basic styling of the 1916 Marmon Model 34 was maintained up to 1927.

1916 Marmon specifications included  - Dark Blue body color, black running gear and cream wheels.  Seven passenger Touring car, four passenger Club Roadster, three passenger Club Roadster and a five passenger Touring Car all selling in 1916 for $2950.00.  136 inch wheelbase, 56 inch gauge, wire wheels, 34 x4 1/2 inch cord tires, six cylinder 33.75 horsepower, 3 1/4 inch bore and 5 1/8 inch stroke, water cooled, 12 volts, cone clutch and selective sliding transmission.  The $2950.00 price includes a top, top hood, windshield, speedometer, ammeter, clock and extra wheel.

In this 1917 Marmon advertisement claims made included - "A Luxury Car Of Low Upkeep Cost!" Additional claims - The new Marmon 34 was one of the strongest cars ever built - It was 1100 pounds lighter than most cars with 136 inch wheelbase - The light weight improved gas mileage and extended tire wear - The 340 cubic inch six cylinder was rated at 74 horsepower and the 1917 Marmon Model 34 had to move 48 pounds per horsepower.

The World War I conflict centered in Europe and began in the summer of 1914. By 1917 The United States was evolved and so was most of the U.S. Auto Industry. In these late 1917 Marmon advertisements The Nordyke and Marmon Co. announces that it is shutting automobile production to support the war effort and that they were to build (5,000) Liberty aircraft engines. In fact Howard Marmon joined the Army Air Corps, rising to the rank of Lieutenant colonel. He then returned home to usher in an improved 1919 Marmon Model 34.

1919 Marmon Automobile line up included a - five passenger Touring Car, four passenger Suburban, three passenger Roadster, two passenger Speedster, seven passenger Landaulet and seven passenger Limo. The Landaulet and Limo was priced at $4,000.00, with all other priced at $2750.00. Advertising claims - "Before You Buy Any Car - Know The Marmon!"

By 1921 The Nordyke and Marmon Co. produced the following American Automobiles - $5,000.00 seven passenger Touring Car shown above, $5,000.00 four passenger touring, $5,000.00 two passenger Roadster, $5,300.00 two passenger Speedster, $6150.00 four passenger Coupe, $6250.00 seven passenger Sedan, $6,800.00 Limousine and a $6,800.00 Town Car.

1921 Marmon specifications included - Body color was blue or maroon with black running gear, 136 inch wheelbase, wire wheels, 32 x 4 1/2 inch tires, water colled six cylinder engine that developed 33.75 horsepower, 3 1/2 inch bore x 5 1/8 inch stroke and three forward one reverse selective sliding gear transmission.

The Marmon was the first of the fine car manufacturers to cut down the high differential in price between open and standard closed cars. Advertising in the mid 1920s claimed "Only $130 More Than An Open Car"! New Marmon standard Sedans were priced at $3,295.00 and new Marmon open Touring cars were priced at $3165.00. Deluxe closed models were priced $3,455.00 to $3,975.00. However, due to the economic downturn in 1924 sales were about 45,000 units by the end of 1925.
