The Springfield Cornice Works
Springfield, MA

The Springfield Cornice Works were manufactures of the Meteor in Springfield, MA. The Meteor was produced for only one year, 1900. It was the first of many American Automobiles to bear this name. The company that built the Meteor were light structural steel fabricators owned by Arthur P. Smith and managed by his younger brother Hinsdale Smith from the late 1800 to about 1900.

Hinsdale Smith took an early interest in the automobile. Between 1896 and 1899 Hinsdale Smith designed and patented a number of transmissions and engines for use in automobiles. In the late 1800s Smith built several prototypes built with a wooden body.

The 1900 Meteor was a light Runabout and equipped with an engine under the hood and a transmission designed by Hinsdale Smith. We are looking for additional Meteor automobile photographs or vintage Meteor advertising for this web page. The Automotor automobile was also built by A. P. Smith and Hinsdale Smith. In the mean time enjoy this 1909 Hess-Bright High Tension Magneto ad from a vintage 1909 magazine.
