The Model Automobile & The Model Automobile Co.
The Model Gas Engine Co. were manufacturers of Model Engines, Transmissions and Finished Cars. Early Model automobiles were equipped with two cylinder double opposed engines 12 to 24 horsepower. The produced a an unusual transmission with three forward and two reverse gears. Final drive was by single chain.
1906 Model Gas Engine Works Auburn, IN Other engines produced by The Model Gas Engine Co. included an air cooled vertical six cylinder with 20 horsepower. Also available were vertical four cylinder water cooled engines with 25 horsepower to 60 horsepower. In addition Transmissions were produced, one mentioned above and two others. A sliding gear with three forward speeds and reverse that could be equipped with chain or shaft drive. A third transmission of the Planetary type was made with two forward gears and three forward gears each with a single reverse. The Model Gas Engine Co. produced engines and transmission for many American Automobiles. Engines and Transmissions were the primary business of The Model Gas Engine Co. and The Gas Engine Works. However, they also produced four different American Automobiles and work trucks priced from $1,000 to $10,000.
1907 Model Automobile Co. Peru, IN Automotive records indicate that The Gas Engine Works were building engines and transmission as late as 1912. The Model Automobile Co. was organized in 1906 to produce the new Model automobiles. In 1907 the Model Automobile Co. produced a tonneau with a tilting body. With the tonneau seat removed this Model turned into a runabout with style that had a platform for commercial purposes. In 1909 the company's owner, E. A. Myers changed the name of the Model automobile to Great Western and his company name to Great Western Automobile Co. and produced automobiles in Peru, IN till 1916.
