Rockaway
The Rockaway Automobile Co.
Rockaway, New Jersey
1900-1903

This company started out as The Rockaway Bicycle Works and evolved into The Rockaway Automobile Co. They built an American Automobile called The Rockaway from 1900 to 1903.

The Rockaway Automobile Co. is also known for building another American Automobile called the Rambler.

However this company and it's possible Rambler automobile had no connection with Thos. B. Jeffery's Rambler built in Kenosha, Wisconsin, beginning in 1902.

In designing the Rockaway this company sought to meet the popular demand for a moderate priced car suitable for everyday work and touring. As seen in the engraving above, the Rockaway was a good looking and durable light two passenger Runabout.

The Rockaway was equipped with a single cylinder watercooled engine that developed eight horsepower. It was mounted under the hood in front so as to be easily accessible, and it was also very simple in design. An unusual brass hood was over the engine. The wheelbase was 70 inches and had a 56 inch track. The frame was made of angle steel, with the joints braced and riveted. The transmission was by planetary system giving two forward speeds and reverse, which are obtained by one lever, which also controls the throttle and sparking. The steering was by a wheel of the lock-worm gear type and wooden wheels were used.

The Rockaway automobile was handsomely painted and upholstered. It weighs 900 pounds, carried two passengers, had a top speed of 30 miles an hour and costs $650.00.
