1903 St John Touring Car The St. John engine was started by what they called a "Loose Flywheel". In starting the engine the fly wheel only is revolved. So the braking effect of compression in the cylinder is avoided. St John claimed a lady could start the engine with ease from the seat. After the loose fly wheel was started by hand crank a lever throws in a clutch which actuates the piston and sparking apparatus and the engine is started.
We are looking for additional St. John automobile photographs or vintage advertising for this web page. In the mean time enjoy this Texaco Gasoline and Motor Oil ad from a vintage 1923 magazine.
