The Coats Touring Car had a 112 inch wheelbase. Advertising claimed “remarkable pick-up and smoothness of operation, together with a hill climbing capacity far ahead of any gas car of equal rated horsepower.”
1923 Coats Steam Car The Coats Steamer used an unusual engine designed by George A. Coats, seen above. This engine had three cylinders, with a 3 1/8 inch bore, 4 inch stroke, four bearing crankshaft and was rated at 35 horsepower. Other features included a two speed transmission with reverse, a simi-flash type boiler, capable of 600 pound of steam pressure and could produce a full head of steam in 60 seconds. The Coats engine was also unusual in that no gearshift, no pilot light and no flywheel were used.
