Gearless Steam Car

The Gearless was one of several American made Steam Cars that were produced in the early 1920s. The Gearless featured two separate two cylinder double acting side valve steam engines. Each operating one rear wheel which made this Steam Car gearless as there was no need for a transmission or rear axle. Both steam engines were controlled by a single throttle.

The Gearless Steam Car was produced as a $2600.00 five passenger Touring Car and a $2650.00 two passenger Roadster. Only a few Gearless Steam Car were ever produced.

The water tank held 25 gallons and speeds of up to 70 MPH was claimed. The Gearless followed standard practice in chassis and body design. The same chassis was used for both the Roadster and Touring car.

Duncan MacDonald was president of The Gearless Motor Corporation. The Corporation failed in 1923 when MacDonald and four other officials were indicated for conspiracy and mail fraud. More than one million dollars worth of Gearless Motor Corp. stock was illegally sold.

The Gearless Steam Car was equipped with a duplex horizontal steam engine that had four cylinders. Each engine functioned independently driving a rear wheel direct.
