The Vandergrift Automobile Company
Philadelphia, PA

The Vandergrift Automobile Company of Philadelphia, PA produced the Autocycle in 1907. This curious vehicle had four wire wheels arranged in a diamond pattern.

The diamond wheel arrangement allowed the Autocycle to turn in a short turning radius. This was another version of how wheels could be located on an American Automobile.

The two passenger could cycle along at speeds up to 45 miles per hour and literally turn around on a dime. The term "diamond" comes from the fact that there were two wheels in line, as on a bicycle and two slightly smaller wheels on the sides about a foot away from the tonneau.

Steering was done by the front and both side wheels. This permitted a very short turning radius. However on rough and rutted roads steering was at a disadvantage as compared to paved city streets.

The drive was on a single rear wheel with power supplied by a single cylinder six horsepower air cooled engine.
