The 1917 Ford Model T looked like an all new American Automobile. However, it was actually a rather simple evolution from the 1916 Ford Model T.

Changes included the fitting of an entirely new radiator of black enamel with rounded corners instead of the sharp angles that it used previously.

The radiator had a smaller water capacity and for this reason was thinner than previous years. The fan operated in a bell shaped shell attached to the rear of the radiator and concentrated the cooling effect of the fan. There was a new sloping hood that eliminated any break where it joins the body. In addition the front and rear fenders conformed to the curve of the wheels.

The 1917 Ford Model T Touring Car was priced at $360.00. A minor change under the hood is the fitting of an electric horn mounted on the right rear side of the cylinders between them and the steering column. The horn is of the vibrator type and is arranged to operate from the current of the flywheel magneto and the button is mounted on the steering column just under the wheel.

The new radiator shell is a two piece stamping, one the shell proper and the other the top portion that bears the Ford name plate stamped on it. The familiar Ford filler cap and radiator spout of brass protrude through the top of the shell. Now that the radiator is enameled, there is very little brass about the 1917 Model T, only the filler and hub caps being finished in brass.

The 1916 Ford Model T convertible Coupelet was replaced with a hardtop in 1917. This two door two passenger 1917 Ford Model T was priced at $505.00 and equipped with a four cylinder engine. In addition to the Coupelet and Touring Car shown above a $345.00 two door two passenger Runabout, a $595.00 four door seven passenger Town Car and a $645.00 two door five passenger Sedan. A total of 722,222 1917 Model T's were produced. About 40,000 less that 1916 Model T production. Due to WW1 1,452 military ambulances and 41,165 bare chassis were produced.

All 1917 Ford Model T's were equipped with a L head 176.7 cubic inch four cylinder engine that developed 22.5 horsepower. The bore was 3 3/4 inches and the stroke wa 4 inches. Compression ratio was 4.0:1, torque was 83 at 900 rpm and solid valve lifters. It used either a Kingston L2 or Holley G carburetor.

Despite the lumbering war economy, The Ford Motor Company continued to offer its Model T, but with considerably less print advertising exposure. In short, the T and its low price were a self seller. The 1918 Ford Model T followed the 1917 Fords.
