The Ford Motor Co.
Detroit, MI

At first glance, there's very little about the new 1954 Ford cars that looks revolutionary, with their styling only modestly updated from the 1953 Ford. Minor trim changes were made, but there were significant engineering improvements especially on their engines.

The long lived Ford flathead V-8 first used on their automobiles in 1932 was replaced with an all new overhead valve V-8 Ford called the "Y-Block".

The Ford Motor Co. advertised it's new "Y-Block" V-8 overhead valve engine as the "Most Modern Eight In Any Car Today". It had high compression, low friction, deep block construction, greater economy, more responsive power and longer engine life. The new V-8 had 239.4 cubic inches, 3.50 inch bore, 3.10 inch stroke and was rated at 130 horsepower.

The new Ford I-block six cylinder had a larger bore (3.62 inches) resulting in greater displacement (223 cubic inches) and a higher compression ratio. The 1954 Ford Six Cylinder was rated at 115 horsepower, 14 more horsepower than the 1953 fords.  the new Six cylinder was smoother, quieter and lasted longer than the previous years.
