The Holmes Motor Vehicle Co. (1906-1907)

Charles Holmes Machine Co. and The Holmes Motor Vehicle Co. of East Boston, Massachusetts built several different American Automobiles in 1906 and 1907. Charles Holmes was the driving force behind the Holmes.

The distinctive feature of the Holmes cars was its friction drive which consists of a movable friction wheel on a cross shaft the ends of which carry the driving sprockets with side chains to the rear wheels

The 1906 Holmes automobiles included two cylinder vertical 10 horsepower water cooled Runabout, a four cylinder air cooled 20 horse power Runabout, a four cylinder water cooled 20 horse power Runabout and and a four cylinder Touring Car fitted with either an air or a water cooled engine of 18 or 20 horse power. Cost range from $650.00 and $750.00 for the runabouts to $1400.00 for the Touring Car.

Shown below is a 1907 Holmes Touring Car. It was equipped with a water cooled four cylinder engine that developed 24 horsepower with a bore of 5 inches and a stroke of 5 inch. The face of the flywheel of the engine is given a copper alloy surface and comes directly in contact with the friction member of the driving gear mounted on a shaft lying parallel with the frame. It had three speeds forward and reverse with the shaft drive. With the standard equipment the Holmes automobiles listed for $1,350 as a five passenger touring car and $1,200 as a runabout.
